Commercial Building Solar Retrofit (250 kW)

Location

Maharashtra, India

Capacity

250 kW Rooftop Solar Plant

Project Type

Commercial Complex

Client’s Challenge

The client was experiencing consistently high electricity bills due to heavy daytime power consumption, which significantly impacted their operational costs. While they had rooftop space available for solar installation, a large portion of the area was already occupied with HVAC ducts and chiller units, making it difficult to utilize the roof efficiently. Another key concern was that the client’s business operations ran throughout the day, which meant the solar project had to be executed in a non-disruptive manner, ensuring that the installation process did not interfere with daily activities or productivity.

Our Design & Engineering Approach

Structural Load Analysis for Safety

Before installation, we carried out a detailed structural load analysis of the rooftop to ensure it could safely support the weight of the solar panels, mounting structures, and wind loads. This step was critical to guarantee both long-term safety and compliance with building standards.

Hybrid Mounting Structure

To overcome space limitations caused by HVAC ducts and chillers, we designed a hybrid mounting system with some panels elevated above obstructions and others flush-mounted directly on the roof. This approach allowed maximum utilization of available rooftop space without compromising system performance.

Seamless Integration with DG & Backup Systems

The solar plant was integrated with the client’s existing diesel generator (DG) set and backup systems. This ensured uninterrupted power supply, with solar taking the primary load during the day while seamlessly switching to backup power in case of outages

Key Solutions Implemented

Efficient Cabling with String Combiner Boxes

To enhance system efficiency, we implemented smart cabling layouts along with string combiner boxes. This reduced transmission losses, simplified maintenance, and ensured smoother power flow from the panels to the inverters.

Net-Metering for Seamless Billing

The solar system was integrated with the DISCOM’s net-metering framework, allowing the client to offset grid consumption. This provided automatic billing adjustments, ensuring that excess solar power generated was credited, resulting in maximum financial savings.

Remote Monitoring for Real-Time Tracking

A remote monitoring system was deployed to continuously track plant performance. This gave the client real-time insights into energy generation, consumption, and system health, enabling proactive maintenance and consistent long-term performance.
